The shift to Wero: what businesses need to know

Starting in October 2026, the rollout of Wero will begin at Dutch banks. The rollout of Wero acceptance for businesses will follow at a later stage, as several functionalities and specifications still need to be further developed.

Although Wero is still often seen as simply a name change from iDEAL to Wero (now known as iDEAL | Wero), much more is changing behind the scenes for merchants. Unlike iDEAL, Wero is a new European payment method with its own rules and possibilities. In this blog, we help businesses navigate this transition by explaining what Wero is, outlining the rollout timeline, and highlighting what you can already do to prepare.

Wero replacement for iDEAL webshop

The Wero rollout timeline

Wero is already live in Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. In the Netherlands, the rollout on the issuing side will begin in October 2026, while France will join in mid-October. Austria is also working on its integration. This means that Wero does not yet cover all of Europe.

In the Netherlands, iDEAL will remain available during the transition period. Currence is working towards the complete phase-out of iDEAL, but the exact date when iDEAL will be discontinued has not yet been determined.

What changes compared to iDEAL?

  • Technology

Behind the scenes, Wero works differently from iDEAL. Wero needs to be integrated separately into your webshop to process Wero payments. The technical integration currently used for iDEAL payments will not automatically support Wero. If you have a custom-built checkout or if you maintain it yourself, a developer will need to add this integration. If you use a ready-made Buckaroo plugin, the integration has already been done for you. You can simply enable Wero in the settings with just a few clicks, without any coding required.

  • Costs

For an iDEAL transaction, you currently pay a fixed fee, regardless of the purchase amount. Wero is also expected to have a fixed fee per transaction. However, it is not yet clear whether this will be the same as the iDEAL fee. In addition, Wero has a variable component based on the transaction amount. This pricing structure is determined by EPI, the organisation behind Wero. In the Netherlands, the variable component is subject to a cap until 31 December 2028.

  • Buyer protection

With Wero, consumers can have a payment investigated through a dispute and chargeback process, similar to what you may already be familiar with from credit cards. For Dutch consumers, the introduction of this process has been postponed until 2028. Please note that customers from Germany and Belgium who make purchases in your webshop can already dispute Wero payments in this way. Certain sectors are exempt: transactions in categories such as government invoices and fines are excluded from this process altogether. Wero identifies these sectors using MCC codes, which are merchant category codes that indicate the industry in which a business operates. There are also two separate lists of MCC codes covering specific exceptions. For certain industries, such as the travel sector, a longer dispute period applies than the standard 120 days, as purchases are often fulfilled several months after payment. In some other sectors, purchases below €10 can also be disputed, whereas disputes are normally only possible for purchases of €10 or more. Buckaroo has included all these different rules in its Payment Method Terms and Conditions under the WERO section.

  • IBAN verification

Do you currently use a small iDEAL transaction to verify whether a customer's name and IBAN match, for example, to validate account details and prevent fraud? This will no longer be permitted with Wero. However, a six-month transition period will apply, starting from the moment Wero introduces its own solution for recurring payments. This solution is currently scheduled to launch in mid-2027. Until that solution becomes available, nothing will change for you in this regard.

What should businesses start preparing for?

For now, there is no need to take any action. Continue using iDEAL in the Netherlands until more information becomes available about the transition to Wero. Further details are expected during Q1 2027. However, now is a good time to review your payment strategy: will you offer Wero, opt for the alternative Pay by Bank, or offer both payment methods?

Whichever option you choose, we recommend planning the transition outside your peak season. For example, consider making the switch in mid-2027, giving you plenty of time to make an informed decision before 1 January 2028, when iDEAL will be permanently phased out.

Buckaroo is closely monitoring developments around Wero, and we'll keep you informed. Need advice on your payment strategy? Get in touch with us. We're happy to help you explore your options.
