The transition from iDEAL to Wero is getting closer. But what does this mean for you as a merchant? Do you need to take action already? Not every detail of the transition has been finalized yet. That’s why we’re answering the most important questions based on what we know so far.
iDEAL is not expected to be discontinued until the end of 2027. There is therefore no immediate need to implement Wero. We recommend starting the transition after the first quarter of 2027. However, if you operate multiple webshops, for example, it may be wise to start preparing earlier.
Are you also active in other countries, such as Germany, Belgium or Luxembourg? If so, it may be beneficial to activate Wero earlier and gain some experience with it. The right timing depends on your specific situation, but for most Dutch merchants, there is currently no need to switch from iDEAL to Wero.
Yes. We have already communicated about the transition to Wero on several occasions, explaining what actions you need to take.
In general, if you use a plugin integration or the Buckaroo Smart Checkout, there is very little you need to do yourself. However, if you have a custom-built integration via the API, some technical adjustments will be required. These are relatively minor.
Yes. You will not be automatically migrated from iDEAL to Wero. Wero is a new payment method, not simply a rebranding of iDEAL.
If you do not want to offer Wero, it is worth considering which alternative payment methods you would like to offer once iDEAL is discontinued, such as Pay by Bank.

Yes, you can. However, we strongly recommend displaying a separate checkout for German customers, if technically possible.
Otherwise, German customers may see both the Wero logo and the iDEAL | Wero logo in the same checkout, which could cause confusion. If you can technically identify German customers, it is therefore advisable to adjust the checkout accordingly.
No. You decide when to make the switch. You may want to consider offering iDEAL and Wero alongside each other initially. This gives you the opportunity to see how your customers use Wero and how the payment method performs in practice. Based on these experiences, you can decide at a later stage when it makes sense to fully transition to Wero. The timing of the switch may therefore vary from merchant to merchant.
The owner of iDEAL aims to discontinue iDEAL on December 31, 2027. You can also choose to disable iDEAL earlier.
Buckaroo is working with Wero and other Payment Service Providers to make the migration as smooth as possible. For example, the start date of the dispute process for Dutch consumers has been postponed until after the migration from iDEAL to Wero.
To support you during the migration, we have made extensive technical documentation available, explaining what the transition means for different integrations, including plugins and API integrations. We also keep the information on buckaroo.nl/wero up to date. Of course, you can always contact us if you need assistance.
No. You decide which Wero features (such as recurring payments) you want to offer.
In general, we expect the additional workload to be limited. How much extra work purchase protection involves in practice depends, among other things, on the products or services you offer and how often customers make use of purchase protection. Buckaroo will also develop a portal that allows you to easily manage disputes in one place. In many cases, responses can be automated.
Both iDEAL and Wero have their own pricing. However, the fees for Wero and iDEAL are not the same: Wero's pricing structure consists of more components than the current iDEAL pricing structure. The exact pricing structure for Wero varies depending on the country and situation.
EPI (the owner of Wero) takes several factors into account, including the country of the consumer and the merchant's legal entity. If both are based in the same country, that country's pricing applies. For other combinations, a different pricing structure applies, which also includes a percentage-based fee.
For a Dutch consumer making a payment on a Dutch webshop, Dutch pricing applies. However, a Wero transaction made by a German consumer on a Dutch website, for example, falls under the standard pricing structure. The same applies to a Belgian consumer making a payment on a Dutch website. If you are a Dutch merchant operating a Belgian website, Belgian pricing may apply to Belgian consumers.
It is not yet certain whether a new contract will need to be signed. In any case, we aim to make the transition as straightforward as possible. Wero has already been added to Buckaroo's Payment Method Terms and Conditions. These terms and conditions will apply as soon as you activate Wero.
Yes, this is possible. You can activate Wero for customers in both countries, and depending on your payment strategy, it can be a valuable addition. For French customers, Wero will become more relevant once it is fully supported by all banks in France. This is expected around mid-2027.
