Debit Mastercard (formerly Maestro) is a SEPA debit card. This payment method allows your customers to pay both online and in shops. Debit Mastercard cards can be linked to a bank account or issued as prepaid cards. The payment solution is accepted by 15 million points of sale. In addition, this payment method is accepted at all cash machines and payment terminals in the Netherlands.

Payment process resembles a credit card payment
With Debit Mastercard, you use your debit card like a credit card. The difference is that when paying via Maestro, the money is debited from your account immediately, whereas when paying by credit card, it is only debited at the end of the calendar month in which the purchase is made.
To pay via Debit Mastercard, consumers enter their card details, card number and expiry date. The payment is confirmed with the authentication method supported by the cardholder's bank (which can be an identifier, a unique transaction code or biometrics). In addition, a balance check is always carried out.
Debit Mastercard is a payment card linked to your bank account but operates worldwide through the Mastercard network. You pay directly from your account, just like with a regular debit card, but you can also use it at millions of (online) stores where Mastercard is accepted.
In Europe, Debit Mastercard is increasingly used as an alternative to Maestro, which is gradually being phased out.
At checkout, you enter your card details: card number, expiry date, and CVC code.
The payment is then immediately debited from your bank account. There is no credit or deferred payment involved. It works like iDEAL or Bancontact, but with Mastercard’s global reach.
Online payments use Mastercard SecureCode (3D Secure), an extra security layer that verifies your identity through your banking app or an SMS code.

In short: Debit Mastercard offers the convenience of a credit card, without debt or interest.
Worldwide — at over 90 million points of sale and online stores that accept Mastercard.
That means:
Online at international webshops such as Amazon, Zalando, AliExpress, and Apple;
In physical stores, hotels, and restaurants;
For subscriptions and reservations;
And contactlessly via phone or smartwatch.
Note: some foreign websites may recognize Debit cards as “credit cards.” That’s normal — the payment still comes directly from your bank account.
Very safe. Payments are protected by Mastercard SecureCode (3D Secure) and your bank’s own security measures. In addition, online purchases are covered by Mastercard Purchase Protection and, in many cases, chargeback options in case of fraud or undelivered products.
Buckaroo ensures secure processing and encrypted communication for every transaction.
For consumers, there are usually no extra fees. The payment is directly debited from your account, just like a regular debit payment.
For webshops, Buckaroo charges a transaction fee per payment, similar to other card payments. The advantage: you reach an international audience with low failure rates at checkout.
Debit Mastercard is active in more than 210 countries and regions, including all European countries where Buckaroo operates: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, and more.
In many European countries, the card is already issued as standard instead of Maestro.
For travelers, that means: one card for Europe — and beyond.
To pay online:
Activate online payments in your banking app or through online banking.
Check that your card number and CVC code are visible.
Use your card at checkout with the Mastercard logo.
Confirm via your banking app (3D Secure).
After activation, you can pay online anywhere Mastercard is accepted.
Mastercard has announced that Maestro cards are gradually being phased out (since 2024–2025). New cards issued by banks are now standard Debit Mastercards.
For consumers, little changes:
You can still withdraw cash and pay online;
Your card will be accepted more widely worldwide;
Payments still come directly from your bank account.
For webshops, it’s important to accept Mastercard — with Buckaroo, that’s easy to set up.
Buckaroo fully supports Mastercard payments (both debit and credit) with added benefits:
One connection for all card brands (Visa, Mastercard, Nexi, etc.);
International acceptance, even outside Europe;
Fast processing and payouts;
Real-time transaction reporting in the Buckaroo portal.
This way, you offer customers worldwide the freedom to pay with their own card — without added complexity.
