The best payment terminal for the terrace season

Before you know it, the sun will be out more often again and the terraces will be full. That also means you need to be able to accept payments outdoors. It’s important to have the right payment equipment that fits your business. Have you, for example, already thought about mobile devices and the coverage of your equipment? And how many terminals do you actually need? In this blog, we share a number of useful tips for choosing the right payment terminal for outdoor use.

Buy a payment terminal

1. Choose lightweight and mobile devices

When your terrace is full, you don’t want to send guests inside to pay. This costs your guests extra time and keeps your seats occupied unnecessarily longer. Mobile devices offer a solution. They allow guests to pay directly at the table. There are different options when it comes to mobile devices. If your staff are walking around with full trays, you don’t want them to have to carry a heavy payment terminal as well. Pocket-sized models with digital receipt options are a good option in that case.

2. Ensure stable coverage

Another key factor is the range of your device. If you’re using a Wi-Fi terminal, it depends on the size of your hospitality venue. Luckily, most modern payment terminals now come with a built-in 4G connection — giving you the freedom to accept payments anywhere. Super handy when you're at an event or working from an external location.

3. Check the battery life

Mobile terminals need to be charged — and there’s quite a bit of variation. Some devices last around 10 hours, others go up to 50. It all depends on how often you use it. Want to recharge as little as possible and still go mobile? Then go for a slightly larger model. Prefer to keep things light and compact? Then a smaller option might be the better fit.

4. How many terminals do you actually need?

In our experience, businesses that handle around 150 transactions per day can usually manage with just one terminal. But if you’ve got a larger team, having a few extra devices can really streamline operations. Just getting started and unsure how many you’ll need? Try renting a couple of extra payment terminals on top of your main device. It’s a great way to test what works best for your business. Keep in mind that demand can vary, think weather changes, late-night shopping, public holidays, or local events. If your peak periods are seasonal, you might consider renting an extra terminal during those times.

Temporary extra capacity with Tap to Pay

Another great option for temporary use is Tap to Pay (also known as SoftPOS). It’s an app you install on a smartphone, turning it into a payment terminal. Ideal as a backup or extra device during busy periods. If you need to process a high volume of transactions in a short time, Tap to Pay may not be the best fit. And of course, you’ll need a compatible smartphone available to use.
