iDEAL renews with iDEAL 2.0

iDEAL is one of the most well known online payment methods since 2005. With more than 1 billion transactions per year and an impressive 70% share of all online consumer payments in the Netherlands, iDEAL has become the most used payment method in the Netherlands. However, the payment and shopping behavior changed in the meantime. Therefore an upgrade has been developed: iDEAL 2.0. 


The way we shop and pay online has changed a lot. For example, mobile shopping has increased and consumers have a growing need for user-friendliness. With iDEAL 2.0, Currence, brand owner of iDEAL, satisfies the current needs of consumers. The new iDEAL promises to make the online purchasing and payment experience even easier and more efficient.
 

What will change with iDEAL 2.0?

One of the most striking improvements of the new iDEAL is the introduction of a new payment page and a personal iDEAL account for users. This account allows customers to store essential data such as delivery addresses and preferred accounts, significantly speeding up order fulfillment and payments.


Behind the scenes, a lot of work has been done on the technical iDEAL infrastructure and a completely new iDEAL page. This page is now ready for use. In the first phase of the rollout, little will change for users. The real benefits will become visible in the next phase that will be announced and introduced soon.


For most Buckaroo customers, in the near future nothing will change. We will continue to support the option of providing iDEAL as a bank choice via the payment page of the webshop for as long as possible. However, Currence has decided to charge extra cost for the functionality of the bank selection.


For customers who use a Buckaroo payment page, things will change after the transfer. They will use a new iDEAL 2.0 page offered by iDEAL itself; this will no longer be the Buckaroo iDEAL checkout. This change can provide benefits in the future because it allows us to respond more quickly to changes in payment behavior and new wishes from the market.


When using this new route, a payer - after the iDEAL logo has been selected - is transferred to the new central iDEAL checkout. On this new iDEAL page, the payer can (as before) select the preferred bank or scan a QR code.


Buckaroo will switch the first merchants to iDEAL 2.0 this year.

What can we expect from iDEAL 2.0 in the future?

In the next phase, users will have the option to create an iDEAL account with which they can save their preferred account and delivery details. This information can be automatically transferred when using the iDEAL payment page, so customers only have to perform one action to complete the payment. This not only leads to more convenience for the user, but also to a higher conversion for online entrepreneurs.


The future of iDEAL 2.0 promises even more innovations, such as new payment options including recurring or later payments. The iDEAL in3 pilot, in collaboration with iDEAL and in3, can also become an integral part of the new iDEAL. These new payment options will be developed in cooperation with the stakeholders in the market, making iDEAL 2.0 the new standard for online payments.
