Payment methods

What is Wero and what does it mean for your webshop?

Wero is a new European payment method developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). It enables customers to pay online directly from their bank account, using their banking app or the Wero app. For merchants in Luxembourg, Wero is relevant because it is being introduced as part of a broader European rollout, with support for cross-border payments within participating markets.

  • Secure account-to-account payments

  • Built for European and cross-border commerce

  • A familiar checkout via banking app or Wero app

Where will Wero be rolled out?

Wero was first launched for person-to-person payments in Belgium, France and Germany. The next phase expands Wero further into e-commerce and additional markets, including Luxembourg. In Luxembourg, several major banks started implementation with support from LUXHUB, and EPI previously communicated availability for Luxembourgish customers from June 2026.

Wero should be seen as a payment method to prepare for now, especially if you sell across borders or want to offer customers a European bank-based checkout experience.

Who is Wero relevant for?

The arrival of Wero is relevant for businesses that process online payments in Luxembourg and want to be ready for the next generation of European account-to-account payments. It fits business models where a simple, bank-based checkout and cross-border reach matter.

  • Webshops (B2C) – for a simple online checkout directly from the customer’s bank account
  • Cross-border merchants – for selling across participating European markets
  • Platforms and digital businesses – for merchants preparing for broader European payment acceptance
